Ashtanga Yoga/ Primary Series

What characterizes ashtanga yoga is the dynamic interconnecting postures that create a sense of flow and movement between the static asanas of hatha yoga. There is also a particular type of breathing that is done with each movement. And the movements between the postures are just as important as the postures themselves.
Ashtanga yoga posturesa are a series of postures that are always done in the same order and performed with particular breathing patterns. The exact definition of vinyasa is movement synchronized with breath. The purpose of vinyasa is to purify the body by increasing circulation and body heat, leading to an increase in sweating. Vinyasa really facilitates flexibility, and tendon and muscle strength.

Vinyasa Flow or Power Vinyasa

Vinyasa means "breath-synchronized movement," and Vinyasa yoga is a series of poses that will move you through the power of inhaling and exhaling. Vinyasa movements are smoothly flowing and almost dance-like, which explains why it is sometimes referred to as Vinyasa Flow or just Flow. Like all styles of yoga, Vinyasa has both mental and physical benefits. Physically, sweat expels toxins and re-energizes your body. Mentally, the synchronized breathing relaxes your mind and helps to release any blockage of energy flow throughout your body. Power Vinyasa may involve more challenging postures and balances. Moondala Flow 1 & 2

Moondala Flow is Michelle's Signature class. Class begins with centering techniques of Pranayama (breath work) & visualizations, to help practitioners get in touch with the energetic as well as physical body. Class will move through postures deeply rooted in the Ashtanga system of yoga, with a focus on individual safety and proper alignment. Michelle always adds a bit of playfulness & attainable modifications when working toward more advanced balancing postures and inversions. Moondala Flow 1 is suitable for all levels of practitioner, Moondala Flow 2 is more advanced, with regard to speed of flow, yoga vocabulary of postures and difficulty of postures themselves. All will be encouraged to honor themselves while working toward their appropriate edge. Class theme & intention will change according to moon phases in an effort to live more in sync with the energy of the day. All will be invited to deeply rest, restore and relax for 10 minutes of savasana at the end of each class.

This class is recommended for those looking for an "athletic" practice with a twist of the mindful & spiritual aspects of the practice.

Yin Yoga

The essence of Yin Yoga is surrender. To balance the heat-building, blood-pumping, strengthening "yang" side of a Vinyasa Flow or Ashtanga practice, Yin focuses on postures that lengthen the muscles surrounding the hips, pelvis, and lower back. Students typically hold these postures for 3-10 minutes per side in order to lengthen the connective tissue that surrounds the joints and increase its elasticity. The elasticity of our connective tissue diminishes with physical activity and aging, which makes Yin essential for injury prevention and joint health. Since a Yin Yoga practice often includes several long, seated forward bending postures, it also restores energy and calms the nervous system. Pure bliss!
